Seasonal, part-time Farmhand and Market Assistant

Schenk Homestead Farm is hiring for a part-time, seasonal farmhand in Naples, NY. We are a market farm focusing on growing vegetables with organic practices for direct to consumer sales at farmers market and restaurants. We utilize high tunnels, no-till methods, and no spray techniques. The farm is operated by partners Jeremiah and Amanda Grisa. 

The position begins in mid April through October. Ideally, there will be two days of field work and one market day. Field work days can be flexible, working two 7 hour days during the week. Generally, our workday is from 8am through 3:30 pm with a half an hour lunch. Depending on weather, we may adjust our workday to avoid high heat during the summer. Our market day is Sunday, opening at 9 am through 1 pm in Brighton, NY. We can provide transportation to and from market from our farm. If transportation is needed, we leave the farm at 7 am and generally return at 2:30 pm. There is flexibility to only work on the farm if not available for markets, and to hire an additional person for market only. 

Position Responsibilities in the Field:

• Sowing seeds and greenhouse work

• Transplanting crops in high tunnels and field beds by hand or with various transplant tools

• Direct seeding crops using seeding tools

• Maintaining no-till field beds by weeding by hand or using cultivation tools

• Trellising vegetables in high tunnels and in the field

• Assisting with harvest-- reading cut lists, harvesting by hand, bunching, washing, packing, and putting into storage

• Recording harvests in log book  

• Maintaining a clean work environment

Position Responsibilities at Market:

• Unpacking and setting up market stand, including tents, tables, table displays

• Displaying vegetables on the stand to optimize customer experience and shopping ease

• Answering customer questions about products and assisting them with sales

• Completing cash and credit card sales

• Break down 

Position Requirements:

• Self motivated

• Ability to be flexible with your time on workdays (starting time due to weather)

• Hardworking and prepared to work in all weather conditions

• Punctual

• An interest in no-till/organic agriculture 

• Commitment to maintaining a high standard and putting your best foot forward everyday

• Ability to work in all weather conditions (rain, snow, heat, cold, wind, etc.)

• Ability to lift 50 lbs 

• Ability to operate equipment or vehicle when necessary (Gator, weed eater, mower, BCS, possibly tractor, etc.) 

Compensation: $15/hour, weekly vegetables to take home, schedule flexibility
